The Grand Canyon was formed by the Colorado River over million years ago. It is located in northern Arizona of the United States of America.
The Grand Canyon is very colorful canyon. It is one of the seven wonders among the world. The 26th president of USA, Theodore Roosevelt was the first person who recommended this Grand Canyon area as “Grand Canyon National Park” while he visited for hunting the mountain lions and enjoying the scenic location. The Grand Canyon was first discovered by García López de Cárdenas, a European in the year of 1540. United States Major John Wesley Powell was the person who led the first scientific expedition to the Grand Canyon in late 1870.
The Grand Canyon is around 446 kilometers (277 miles) long and its width is between 6 to 29 kilometers (4 to 18 miles). Its depth is around 1.83 kilometers which is more than a mile. The channels cut off by the Colorado River over the Colorado Plateau were formed by nearly two billion years. Recent study says that the Colorado River had started this eroding since 17 million years ago. As a result, it is the Grand Canyon what we see today.
There are two rims in Grand Canyon as north and south rims. North rim of the Grand Canyon is 300 meters (1000 feet) higher than its south rim. So this north rim acquires more rain and snow. The temperature of this north rim is also cool than the south rim due to its higher elevation which is 2438 meters (8000 feet) above the sea level. The Grand Canyon is also well viewed from this north rim due to its high altitude than the south rim.
